How Big Is 1/18 Scale? 1:18 Diecast Car Size in Inches & cm (2026)

A 1:18 scale model is 1/18th the size of the real vehicle, which puts most 1:18 diecast cars at roughly 10-11 inches (25-28 cm) long. Small cars come in under 9 inches, and full-size pickups and SUVs stretch past 12 inches.

If you’ve only held a Hot Wheels car, that’s a big jump. A 1:18 is a shelf piece, not a pocket toy. Below you’ll find a rule for sizing any car, a chart in inches and centimeters, a full length-width-height example, and what it all means for shelf and case space.

How big is 1/18 scale? The short answer

At 1:18, every dimension of the real vehicle is divided by 18: length, width and height. So there’s no single “standard” 1:18 size. A city car and a full-size pickup are both 1:18, but one can be several inches longer than the other.

  • Typical car: about 10-11 in (25-28 cm) long
  • Small cars: under 9 in
  • Full-size trucks and SUVs: past 12 in, up to about 13 in

The rule to remember: every foot of real car becomes 2/3 of an inch of model. That’s why 1:18 is also called “two-thirds inch scale.”

1/18, 1:18 and “1/18th” all mean the same thing. A scale can be written as a fraction or a ratio. The bigger the bottom number, the smaller the model, so 1:18 is larger than 1:24, 1:43 or 1:64.

How to work out any car at 1:18

  • Inches: real length in inches ÷ 18 = model length in inches
  • Metric: real length in mm ÷ 18 = model length in mm
  • Feet shortcut: real length in feet × 2/3 = model length in inches

Example: a Corvette Stingray of about 180 in works out to about 10 in at 1:18.

Worked example: a 1:18 Ford Mustang, length, width and height

Length is only part of the picture, so here’s one car done in full. The current seventh-generation Ford Mustang measures 189.4 in (4,810 mm) long, 75.4 in (1,915 mm) wide and about 55 in (roughly 1,400 mm) tall in standard form.

DimensionReal carAt 1:18
Length189.4 in / 4,810 mmabout 10.5 in / 26.7 cm
Width75.4 in / 1,915 mmabout 4.2 in / 10.6 cm
Heightabout 55 in / 1,400 mmabout 3.1 in / 7.8 cm

The same math works for any car. A vehicle about 6 ft wide comes out around 4 in wide at 1:18; one about 4.5 ft tall sits around 3 in tall. A 1:18 car is far longer than it is tall, so shelf length and depth matter much more than height.

Treat these as close estimates, not exact model measurements. Makers round, and mirrors, spoilers and wider bodywork all change the numbers.

The Maisto 1:18 2025 Ford Mustang GTD shows what a modern Mustang-based car looks like at this size. The GTD has wider bodywork than a standard Mustang, so the model won’t match the figures above exactly. Maisto is a mass-market brand, which makes this an easy first 1:18 or a gift for a Ford fan. 1:18 vs Hot Wheels (1:64), 1:43 and 1:24

For the same real car, a 1:18 model is:

  • about 1.33× the length of a 1:24
  • about 2.4× the length of a 1:43
  • about 3.6× the length of a 1:64, the size of most Hot Wheels cars

Length undersells the gap. Because every dimension grows, a 1:18 takes up roughly 45 times the volume of the same car at 1:64 (3.56 × 3.56 × 3.56). A handful of 1:18s can fill a shelf that would hold dozens of 1:64 cars.

1:18 isn’t the biggest scale, either. One maker lists 1:12 models at about 15 in (38 cm) and 1:8 at about 24 in (60 cm). The comparison table on this page puts the common scales side by side. For the full trade-offs, see our 1:64 vs 1:43 vs 1:18 scale guide. If 1:18 feels too big, the 1:24 scale guide covers the next size down.

Why 1:18 is the 'display' scale: what the extra size gets you

The extra size makes room for working parts. According to Wikipedia’s overview, 1:18 diecast cars are usually made of Zamak zinc alloy with plastic parts, and virtually all recent models have opening doors, hood and trunk, plus steering that turns the front wheels.

That makes 1:18 a scale for adults and collectors who want one detailed centerpiece rather than a long row of cars. Not every 1:18 model opens up, so check the listing if working parts matter to you.

The Maisto 1:18 Porsche 911 GT3 Racing Edition shows the other end of the range. The 911 is a compact sports car, so at 1:18 it sits toward the shorter end of the chart. The catalog lists it in several colors, including black, red, blue and orange. It suits Porsche fans and anyone who wants a 1:18 that takes a little less room. If you want a big, imposing model, look at larger cars or trucks instead. For Porsche at every scale, see our Porsche 911 diecast collectors guide.

How much space does a 1:18 car need? Shelves, boxes and display cases

Working from the scale math above, a good rule of thumb:

  • Shelf length: about 12 in per car, plus a little clearance between models
  • Shelf depth: about 5-6 in
  • Trucks and SUVs: allow more length, since a 19-20 ft pickup works out to about 12.7-13.3 in

Retail boxes are bigger than the model. If you’re gift-wrapping or planning storage, go by the package size on the listing, not the model’s length.

Dust is the main enemy at this size, and a large model has a lot of surface to collect it. The 1:18 Acrylic Display Case for Diecast Models is listed in a 1:18 display format for dust protection and a cleaner shelf look, with several base and cover styles. It suits anyone displaying a 1:18 car out in the open. Before you order, compare the case’s internal length, width and height with your model, especially for trucks, SUVs or cars with big wings. More options are in our diecast display cases collection.

Is 1:18 the right size for you?

  • Choose 1:18 if you want one detailed centerpiece for a shelf, desk or office, or a substantial gift for an adult car fan.
  • Choose 1:64 if you want to collect many cars in little space.
  • Choose 1:24 or 1:43 if you want more detail than 1:64 without giving up a foot of shelf per car.

Buying for the holidays? A 1:18 makes an impressive gift. Just remember it takes about a foot of shelf, and the box is larger still. Browse our Christmas diecast gifts or the full 1:18 scale diecast collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many inches is a 1/18 scale car?

Most 1:18 cars are about 10-11 inches (25-28 cm) long. Small cars can be around 8 inches, while full-size trucks and SUVs reach 13 inches or more. Divide the real car's length in inches by 18 to get the model's length.

How big is 1/18 scale in cm?

Typically about 24-30 cm long. Divide the real car's length in cm by 18; a current Ford Mustang, for example, works out to about 26.7 cm.

Is 1/18 bigger than 1/24?

Yes. The smaller the bottom number, the bigger the model. The same car at 1:18 is about a third longer than at 1:24, roughly 10 in versus 7.5 in for a Corvette.

How does a 1:18 car compare to a Hot Wheels car?

Hot Wheels cars are roughly 1:64, about 2.5-3 inches long. A 1:18 model of the same car is about 3.6 times longer and takes up roughly 45 times the volume.

Is 1:18 the largest diecast scale?

No. Larger scales exist, including 1:12 at about 15 inches and 1:8 at about 24 inches.

What size display case do I need for a 1:18 model?

Choose a case made for 1:18 and check its internal length, width and height against your model. Plan for about 12 inches of length for most cars and more for trucks and SUVs.
